I have officially had an Australian Experience so now I can write about it - woo hoo!
Well, it was a cherry-ripper of a holiday hoot! Gosh, its hard being back at the Seattle grind as I'm answering law phones while writing this. However, My Aussie experience as follows:
Weather: I came into a week's worth of rain, but the climate was yet mild even still. Summer all year round, yeah, I could live with that. I just thought I had left the wet behind in Seattle is all but evidently it attached itself to me for the week. I stayed in Glebe, a cozy cafe community whose main street is lined with trendy shops and restaurants ranging from mid-to-higher priced eateries. Thanks to the rain, my hair looked as young Chelsea Clinton's had as if she stuck her finger in a light socket. And on that note, salons are out of the question however; 65 bucks for a simple wash & dry w/iron - yikes!! That'll teach me to try and do without my own blow-dryer.
People. Unbelievably amicable; their dispositions really are as sunny as Australia itself. Their use of words accentuates the impish-Aussie type implied subtle humour served up with a deal of casual charm and at times hints of playful sarcasm.
Food: Over the top - Anything and everything that could ever be created in so far as combinations there of, Australia's got it. Never have I seen so many different kinds of Kit Kat bars ranging in so many flavours!! Like something you might dream about after eating a late night dish of chinese food. Shelves and shelves of it. The U.S. is way behind on the junk scene I see; I suppose we ought to do something about that. Cherry Ripes are the 'food for the Gods' - I had a sundae orgy with the candy bar bathing in it; my arteries were reeling from fright just from the sight of the two chocolate chimneys coming out the tip-top of the ice cream - and on the subject of: what's the deal of serving ice cream with pancakes??? Not that I'm complaining mind you. And a freshly deep-fried churro to drown in a pot of melted chocolate is the new alternative medication for PMS ladies - thanks to San Churro Chocolateria in Glebe. You are missing if you've not yet tried. But I couldn't believe it when it cost me $6.50 for a small organic muffin - yes, I know, it's because it was organic and yet I wasn't asked if I wanted 'fries with that'. I could've bought an entire small roadside bake stand in a third-world country for that much. And there's no such thing as asking for a 'cup of coffee'. But I learned quite quickly that a strong flat white is what will get me there and make it a large please. My one complaint, I suppose, is that Aussies smoke and they do it a lot - worse than Seattlites and that's bad. I implore you to give the patch a go.
Fashion: I see the mini skirt is a die hard with the low-riding belt at the hip; I also noted an occasional hint of the 'Seattle grunge' as if to keep me from getting homesick with the same tats and piercings everywhere. The sights were amazing.
Other: From afar, I can see how one might think the Opera House was a cluster of sail boats. I took a ride on the ferry gliding over the harbour which is exceptional as were the Blue Mountains, a glistening green jewel. The steam engine through it all made it all that more enchanting.
I loved how Sydney is peppered throughout with little boroughs, I shall aspire to Paddington and Woollahra. Oh yeah, I saw where Nicole and Russell live. And I adore those little flats that copy after those units one might see in New Orleans' French Quarter with the decorative iron work terraces.
Still yet so much to see and do.
Sydney - a great place to experience, live, love and get married?? I think quite possibly so, I Do.
